McDonalds is one of the worlds premier entrepreneurial success stories. However, early in 2003, McDonald’s has announced a re-structure plan including cutting jobs, closing many restaurants and slowing down the expansion plan. What went wrong with McDonald’s and what can other international franchises learn from these mistakes are investigated. Result shows business environments, corporate level strategies, and operations are the key issues. Keywords: McDonald’s, international franchising, fast food. In a global scale, the fast-food industry is facing some serious threats. First, the fast-food market has reached the boiling point in most of the main market such as United States, Germany, and United Kingdom. The war price of fast-food giants is a clear example of market saturation, for example, Wendy’s chain has introduced a lowest ever price value meal: 9p. In terms of the product life cycle, quick service restaurants have reached maturity stage. Quick Service Restaurant Product Life Cycle Second, rising incomes allow people more opportunities to tur n eating out into a more individualised experience rather than a routine quick fix. In United Kingdom, market research reveals that the total number of meals eaten in the non-quick service restaurant sector has risen while meals eaten in the Quick Service Restaurant sector have fallen in total The Times 100, 2003). In United States, the situation is quite similar. According to a new McKinsey study, the fast-food industry will grow by only 1% a year during the next eight yearsless than half the current rate. In contrast, full-service restaurants will see annual increased sales of 3. 2%. In sum, sit-down eateries will see $42 billion in new revenue over the next eight years compared with $13 billion for quickservice restaurants. The rationale behind McKinseys numbers: As they age, Americans tend to trade up from quick-service to full-service restaurants. The consulting firm said that, in 2000, Americans etween the ages of 18 and 24 ate at fast-food restaurants 79% of the time and at f ull-service restaurants 21% of the time. Meanwhile, Americans who were 65 and older went to quick-service restaurants only 57% of the time and to sit-down restaurants 43% of the time. Headed in their direction are the Americans in the boomer demographicages 50 to 64who ate at fast-food restaurants for 65% of their meals and at full-service restaurants for 35% (Figure 2). Third, convenience food is a substitute threat for fast-food sector. Packed-food industry (Kraft, Campbell, etc. ) is in head-to-head competition with ast-food industry for a bigger portion of food market. Although McDonalds did not invent the hamburger or the fast-food restaurant, their name has become nearly synonymous with both. The history of McDonald’s began in 1940 when brothers Dick and Mac McDonald opened the first restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The McDonalds restaurant gained fame after 1948, when the brothers implemented their innovative Speedee Service System, an assemblyline hamburger construction and self-serve operation. In 1954, entrepreneur and milkshake-mixer alesman Ray Kroc became interested in the McDonalds restaurant when he learned of its extraordinary capacity. Upon seeing the restaurant in operation, he approached the McDonald brothers with a proposition to open new McDonalds restaurants, with himself as the first franchisee. Kroc worked hard to sell McDonalds. He even attempted to overcome on his wartime in connection with Walt Disney, in the failed hope of opening a McDonalds at the soon-to-be-opened Disneyland. Dult learning Essay

Knowles adult learning theory is an attempt to develop adult learning in which he emphasizes that adults are mature people responsible for making sound decisions. There are certain assumptions about the design for learning by Knowles in his theory (Brookfield Stephen, 1994). First, it is assumed that adults need to know the reasons for learning something. Second, adults should learn through experience. Third, adults approach learning as a way of problem solving. Finally, adults learn best whereby the topic is of immediate value. These assumptions are important because they reflect the significance of Knowles adult learning theory. In health care organizations, Knowles theory is of paramount importance because it helps them to handle any form of health problem as a way of maintaining safety at work place. Experience and responsibility is of paramount importance and teaching adults on how to handle health issues at work place controls occurrence of health hazards. There are certain barriers to education or learning which include first, inability of adults to focus on topics. This is a major barrier because the adults have many things to attend to such as family, work and assignments. Second, weak study or critical thinking skills which do not allow the learners to concentrate in class are a major barrier. It is barrier to learning process because the tutor has to commit a lot of his or time trying to explain a simple concept to old adults (Taylor Edward, 1999). Third, unlearning old knowledge and low self-esteem is a major barrier to learning process because of old age which makes adult learners to have low esteem. Fourth, adults have very tight schedule during the day and this means that they have a challenge of time constraints and commitments. Machiavellian Politics In The Prince Essays - Machiavellianism Machiavellian Politics in The Prince The Prince, written by Niccolo Machiavelli, is one of the first examinations of politics and science from a purely scientific and rational perspective. Machiavelli theorizes that the state is only created if the people cooperate and work to maintain it. The state is also one of man?s greatest endeavors, and the state takes precedence over everything else. The state should be one?s primary focus, and maintaining the sovereignty of the state one?s most vital concern. The state is founded on the power of its military. Therefore, a strong military is vital to maintaining the state. Machiavelli believes that men respect power, but they will take advantage of kindness. He believes that when given the opportunity one must destroy completely, because if one does not he will certainly be destroyed. The prince should lead the military, and he has to be intelligent. An effective politician can make quick and intelligent choices about the problems that coneztly arise before him. He must also have virtue, which means he is strong, confident, talented, as well as smart. A prince cannot be uncertain, because uncertainty is a sign of weakness. Fortune controls half of human?s actions, and man?s will control the other half. Virtue is the best defense for fortune, and virtue must be used in order to keep fortune in check. The prince must take advantage of situations based solely on if it is best for the state. He should choose his decisions based on contemporary and historical examples. A prince cannot consider whether his acts are moral or immoral, and he instead must act in an unbiased manner for the state. Also, it does not matter how the state achieves its goals, as long as these goals are achieved. Finally, regardless of the personal morality involved, the prince should be praised if he does good for the state and berated if he hurts the state. Machiavelli?s principles have widespread influence, and they are quite similar to some of Thomas Hobbes ideas in Leviathan. Machiavelli has a very low opinion of the people throughout history. In general, he feels that men are "ungrateful, fickle, liars, and deceiver." "They shun danger and are greedy for profit; while you treat them well, they are yours. They would shed their blood for you ? but when you are in danger they turn against you." Machiavelli basically has little respect for the people, and he feels as though they have not earned much either. He uses this as justification for the use of fear in order to control people. He also feels that men are "wretched creatures who would not keep their word to you, you need not keep your word to them." This sense of fairness justifies breaking one?s word to men. Machiavelli also writes about how hard it must be for a prince to stay virtuous. He concludes that with so many wretched men around virtue is hard to create in oneself. "The fact is that a man who wants to act virtuously in every way necessarily comes to grief among so many who are not virtuous." Overall, Machiavelli is very pessimistic about the abilities of the people. He feels that after examining people through history, his conclusions of wretched men are correct. Machiavelli tells us that the sovereign must take whatever action is necessary to maintain order in society. In time this will result in the most compassionate choice too. Machiavelli explains that, Cesare Borgia, by using cruelty was able to achieve order and obedience in Romangna. This contrast with the inaction of the Florentines, who allowed internal conflict to develop in Pistoia, resulting in devastation of the city. Therefore, a number of highly visible executions can be a very effective means of controlling the people and in preventing a major out break of violence and murder. Machiavelli also cites the tremendous military successes of Hannibal. Americans were reaching new heights and discovering innovative hobbies. With these new discoveries came criticism. The Scopes Trial, change in womans status and the arrival of jazz, among others, led to the tension between the old and the new, which were manifested by the Ku Klux Klan, Tennessee Evolution Case and the Womens Christian Temperance Union. What led to the trepidation between the former and the new? The Scopes Trial was one event that contributed to the tension. The Scopes Trial also known as the Tennessee Evolution case questioned the evolution of mankind. The belief that everything in the Bible should be accepted as it is given was contradicted when Darwin concluded that humans came from an animal. This made many turn towards science for answers, leaving Christianity irrelevant to the Lost Generation. Females of the Lost Generation were also involved in another change. Change in womens status was another idea that led to the tension. Women before the 1920s were formal, conservative and bland. The new women were aggressive, confident, and opinionated. They began to search for their position in society and to level their shoulders with men in equality. They cut their hair, smoked, danced, wore short dresses, and called themselves flappers.
